Maria Luisa Balmer\u00a0<\/span>has been an assistant professor at the\u00a0<\/span>University of Bern\u00a0<\/span>and University Hospital of Bern and at the DCB (Diabetes Center Berne) since 2021. Together with her team, she researches the complex pathologically altered bodily functions (pathophysiology) and connections between the intestinal flora, metabolism and inflammation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

We<\/span> <\/span>want<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>understand<\/span> in <\/span>more<\/span> <\/span>detail<\/span> <\/span>how<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> gut <\/span>microbiota<\/span> <\/span>contributes<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>people<\/span> <\/span>becoming<\/span> <\/span>obese<\/span>, <\/span>or<\/span> not. <\/span>The gut <\/span>microbiota<\/span> <\/span>refers<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> a <\/span>group<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>tiny<\/span> <\/span>organisms<\/span>, <\/span>mainly<\/span> <\/span>bacteria<\/span>, <\/span>that<\/span> live in <\/span>our<\/span> gut and <\/span>play<\/span> an <\/span>important<\/span> <\/span>role<\/span> in <\/span>digestion<\/span> and <\/span>health<\/span>. <\/span>We<\/span> <\/span>are<\/span> <\/span>interested<\/span> in <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>following<\/span> <\/span>questions<\/span>: <\/span>Which<\/span> <\/span>bacteria<\/span> <\/span>are<\/span> <\/span>beneficial<\/span>? <\/span>Which<\/span> <\/span>ones<\/span> <\/span>are<\/span> <\/span>more<\/span> <\/span>likely<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>contribute<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>development<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>obesity<\/span> <\/span>(<\/span>severe<\/span> <\/span>overweight<\/span>, <\/span>from<\/span> <\/span>body<\/span> <\/span>mass<\/span> <\/span>index<\/span> 30) <\/span>and <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>associated<\/span> <\/span>complications<\/span> such <\/span>as<\/span> <\/span>diabetes<\/span> <\/span>or<\/span> <\/span>liver<\/span> <\/span>disease<\/span>? <\/span>And <\/span>why<\/span> <\/span>is<\/span> <\/span>this<\/span> so? Are <\/span>there<\/span> <\/span>certain<\/span> <\/span>metabolic<\/span> <\/span>products<\/span> <\/span>with<\/span> <\/span>which<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> intestinal <\/span>bacteria<\/span> <\/span>influence<\/span> <\/span>our<\/span> <\/span>metabolism<\/span>? These <\/span>are<\/span> all <\/span>questions<\/span> <\/span>that<\/span> <\/span>occupy<\/span> <\/span>us<\/span> in <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>team<\/span> and <\/span>which<\/span> <\/span>we<\/span> <\/span>approach<\/span> in <\/span>very<\/span> different <\/span>ways<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Obesity<\/span> and type 2 <\/span>diabetes<\/span> <\/span>have<\/span> <\/span>become<\/span> a <\/span>pandemic<\/span> <\/span>that<\/span> <\/span>is<\/span> <\/span>spreading<\/span> <\/span>ever<\/span> <\/span>faster<\/span>. <\/span>Whereas<\/span> in <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>past<\/span> <\/span>it<\/span> was <\/span>mainly<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>industrialised<\/span> <\/span>nations<\/span> <\/span>that<\/span> <\/span>were<\/span> <\/span>affected<\/span>, <\/span>today<\/span> <\/span>it<\/span> <\/span>is<\/span> also <\/span>affecting<\/span> countries <\/span>that<\/span> <\/span>previously<\/span> <\/span>had<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>struggle<\/span> <\/span>with<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>opposite<\/span>, <\/span>namely<\/span> <\/span>malnutrition<\/span> and <\/span>underweight<\/span>. <\/span>I am also <\/span>concerned<\/span> <\/span>that<\/span> <\/span>more<\/span> and <\/span>more<\/span> <\/span>children<\/span> and <\/span>adolescents<\/span> <\/span>are<\/span> <\/span>affected<\/span> <\/span>by<\/span> <\/span>obesity<\/span>. <\/span>Despite<\/span> <\/span>many<\/span> <\/span>efforts<\/span> in <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>area<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>prevention<\/span> and <\/span>therapy<\/span>, <\/span>there<\/span> <\/span>are<\/span> <\/span>more<\/span> and <\/span>more<\/span> <\/span>overweight<\/span> <\/span>people<\/span>, <\/span>with<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>corresponding<\/span> <\/span>health<\/span> <\/span>consequences<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is your biggest challenge as a professor?<\/h3>\n

As a <\/span>researcher<\/span>, <\/span>doctor<\/span> and <\/span>mother<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>two<\/span> <\/span>children<\/span>, <\/span>my<\/span> <\/span>everyday<\/span> <\/span>life<\/span> <\/span>is<\/span> <\/span>incredibly<\/span> <\/span>varied<\/span>,<\/span> diverse <\/span>and <\/span>occasionally<\/span> <\/span>a <\/span>little<\/span> <\/span>chaotic<\/span>. I find <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>balancing<\/span> <\/span>act<\/span> <\/span>between<\/span> <\/span>all<\/span> <\/span>my<\/span> different <\/span>activities<\/span> <\/span>very<\/span> <\/span>challenging<\/span>, but at <\/span>the<\/span> same time <\/span>enriching<\/span>. The <\/span>biggest<\/span> <\/span>challenge<\/span> <\/span>is<\/span> <\/span>probably<\/span> <\/span>not <\/span>to<\/span> miss out <\/span>myself<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My <\/span>goal<\/span> <\/span>with<\/span> <\/span>my<\/span> <\/span>research<\/span> <\/span>is<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>contribute<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> a <\/span>better<\/span> <\/span>understanding<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>mechanistic<\/span> <\/span>connections<\/span> <\/span>between<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> gut <\/span>microbiota<\/span> and <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>development<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>obesity<\/span> and <\/span>metabolic<\/span> <\/span>complications<\/span>, and <\/span>thus<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>gain<\/span> <\/span>new<\/span> <\/span>approaches<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>prevention<\/span> and <\/span>therapy<\/span>. At <\/span>the<\/span> same time, <\/span>it<\/span> <\/span>is<\/span> <\/span>important<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>me<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>be<\/span> a <\/span>role<\/span> <\/span>model<\/span> <\/span>for<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>next<\/span> <\/span>generation<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>young<\/span> <\/span>scientists<\/span> <\/span>and <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>show<\/span> <\/span>that<\/span> <\/span>becoming<\/span> <\/span>a<\/span> <\/span>professor<\/span> <\/span>is<\/span> <\/span>a <\/span>realistic<\/span> <\/span>goal<\/span>, <\/span>even<\/span> <\/span>for<\/span> <\/span>people<\/span> <\/span>who<\/span> <\/span>have<\/span> <\/span>other<\/span> <\/span>priorities<\/span> <\/span>in <\/span>life<\/span>, <\/span>such <\/span>as<\/span> <\/span>a <\/span>family<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our<\/span> <\/span>research<\/span> <\/span>is<\/span> <\/span>incredibly<\/span> <\/span>broad<\/span> – <\/span>from<\/span> <\/span>mouse<\/span> <\/span>experiments<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>clinical<\/span> <\/span>trials<\/span>. <\/span>For<\/span> <\/span>example<\/span>, <\/span>we<\/span> <\/span>work<\/span> <\/span>with<\/span> <\/span>mice<\/span> in <\/span>which<\/span> <\/span>we<\/span> <\/span>can<\/span> <\/span>precisely<\/span> <\/span>control<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>composition<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> intestinal <\/span>bacteria<\/span> and <\/span>thus<\/span> find out <\/span>which<\/span> <\/span>bacteria<\/span> <\/span>contribute<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>development<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>obesity<\/span>. On <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>other<\/span> <\/span>hand<\/span>, <\/span>we<\/span> <\/span>are<\/span> <\/span>currently<\/span> <\/span>running<\/span> a <\/span>clinical<\/span> <\/span>trial<\/span> <\/span>called<\/span> <\/span>FibreGum<\/span> <\/span>with<\/span> <\/span>obese<\/span> <\/span>children<\/span> <\/span>and <\/span>adolescents<\/span>, in <\/span>which<\/span> <\/span>we<\/span> <\/span>are<\/span> <\/span>testing<\/span> a <\/span>special<\/span> <\/span>chewing<\/span> <\/span>gum<\/span> <\/span>that<\/span> <\/span>contains<\/span> <\/span>dietary<\/span> <\/span>fibres<\/span>. <\/span>We<\/span> <\/span>hope<\/span> <\/span>that<\/span> <\/span>this<\/span> will <\/span>have<\/span> a <\/span>favourable<\/span> <\/span>influence<\/span> on <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>composition<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> intestinal <\/span>microbiota<\/span> and <\/span>that<\/span> <\/span>we<\/span> will <\/span>be<\/span> <\/span>able<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> support <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>children<\/span> in <\/span>losing<\/span> <\/span>weight<\/span> in a <\/span>low-threshold<\/span> <\/span>way<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

My <\/span>research<\/span> <\/span>laboratory<\/span> <\/span>and <\/span>my<\/span> <\/span>office<\/span> <\/span>are<\/span> <\/span>located<\/span> at <\/span>the<\/span> DCB and I <\/span>very<\/span> <\/span>much<\/span> <\/span>appreciate<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>fruitful<\/span> <\/span>collaboration<\/span>. In <\/span>addition<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>infrastructure<\/span>, <\/span>the<\/span> DCB also <\/span>actively<\/span> <\/span>supports<\/span> <\/span>us<\/span> in <\/span>conducting<\/span> <\/span>clinical<\/span> <\/span>trials<\/span>. <\/span>The <\/span>familiar<\/span> and <\/span>friendly<\/span> <\/span>environment<\/span> <\/span>is<\/span> <\/span>inspiring<\/span> <\/span>and a <\/span>prerequisite<\/span> <\/span>for<\/span> <\/span>successful<\/span> <\/span>research<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For<\/span> <\/span>me<\/span>, <\/span>this<\/span> <\/span>prize<\/span> <\/span>is<\/span> <\/span>primarily<\/span> a <\/span>huge<\/span> <\/span>recognition<\/span>, <\/span>which<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>course<\/span> <\/span>makes<\/span> <\/span>me<\/span> <\/span>incredibly<\/span> happy. <\/span>It<\/span> <\/span>is<\/span> <\/span>wonderful<\/span> <\/span>that<\/span> <\/span>my<\/span> <\/span>research<\/span> <\/span>has<\/span> <\/span>met<\/span> <\/span>with<\/span> such <\/span>broad<\/span> <\/span>interest<\/span> and <\/span>that<\/span> <\/span>it<\/span> <\/span>has<\/span> <\/span>now<\/span> <\/span>found<\/span> <\/span>its<\/span> <\/span>way<\/span> <\/span>into<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>public<\/span> <\/span>eye<\/span> <\/span>through<\/span> <\/span>this<\/span> <\/span>prize<\/span>. The <\/span>response<\/span> <\/span>has<\/span> <\/span>been<\/span> <\/span>incredible<\/span> and <\/span>has<\/span> <\/span>touched<\/span> <\/span>me<\/span> <\/span>very<\/span> <\/span>much<\/span>. I <\/span>hope<\/span> <\/span>that<\/span> <\/span>this<\/span> will <\/span>motivate<\/span> <\/span>many<\/span> <\/span>young<\/span> <\/span>researchers<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>continue<\/span> on <\/span>their<\/span> <\/span>path<\/span>.\u00a0 I will also <\/span>continue<\/span> <\/span>my<\/span> <\/span>efforts<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>contribute<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>fight<\/span> <\/span>against<\/span> <\/span>diseases<\/span> such <\/span>as<\/span> <\/span>obesity<\/span> and <\/span>diabetes<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Maria Luisa Balmer <\/span>is<\/span> SNSF <\/span>professor<\/span> and <\/span>research<\/span> <\/span>group<\/span> <\/span>leader<\/span> at <\/span>the<\/span> University and Inselspital Bern. <\/span>With<\/span> her <\/span>team<\/span> <\/span>at <\/span>the<\/span> DCB, <\/span>she<\/span> <\/span>researches<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>connection<\/span> <\/span>between<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>microbiota<\/span>, <\/span>metabolism<\/span> and <\/span>the<\/span> immune <\/span>system<\/span> in <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>context<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>obesity<\/span> and <\/span>diabetes<\/span>. <\/span>She<\/span> <\/span>is<\/span> a <\/span>specialist<\/span> in <\/span>general<\/span> internal <\/span>medicine<\/span> and <\/span>works<\/span> in <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>osteometabolic<\/span> <\/span>consultation<\/span> at <\/span>the<\/span> University Clinic <\/span>for<\/span> <\/span>Endocrinology<\/span> and <\/span>Diabetology<\/span> in Bern.
